The History of La Roque D'Anthéron Piano Festival

Over the past twenty-five years , the La Roque d'Anthéron Piano Festival has emerged as a mandatory event in the piano world. The world's greatest performers appear on the stage of the Parc de Florans, an open air auditorium where the music takes on a magical quality. Each year's programme includes other interesting venues as well. The La Roque d'Anthron Piano Festival offers, in addition, the opportunity to discover young performers and diverse styles of music, including classical, contemporary, jazz and electronic music.

The La Roque d'Anthron Piano Festival is the fruit of the encounter in 1980 between Paul Onoratini, mayor of a village of a few thousand inhabitants in the heart of Provence, and René Martin then a young intern in the Regional Cultural Affairs Office.Ren Martin was looking to create a piano festival and Paul Onoratini gave him his whole-hearted support.

In 1981, from the 10th to the 27th of August, the first notes were heard in the park of the Château de Florans, played by top pianists Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, Soltan Kocsis and othersFrom its very first year, with only twelve concerts on the programme, the La Roque d'Anthron Piano Festival received the highest honours. The press at the time was already proclaiming the Festival as a mandatory venue both for pianists and music lovers, and nearly 9,200 spectators discovered the village of La Roque d'Anthron that first year..Artistic Director René Martin and President Paul Onoratini did not hesitate to take up new challenges.

The greats

Each year the Festival has widened its offering. The greats followed Radu Lupu, François-Ren Duchable, Kun Woo Paik, and Sviatoslav Richter. And there were great voices as well, like Barbara Hendricks, who was a special guest of the Festival in 1986 and 1989. In only a few years the Festival had become a must on the piano circuit. Everyone came, not only the famous, but young talents as well, rarely seen performers who had never before appeared in France, like Youri Egorov, Oleg Maisenberg, Janis Valkarelis, Lars Vogt, Steven Lubin, Nelson Goerner and Richard Goode, who gave their first French recitals at La Roque d'Anthron. In addition to the concerts, the musicians also offer lectures and master classes and participate in musical events, all with the same goal to create a special musical experience. By including little-known or forgotten repertoire, contemporary music and jazz, the La Roque d'Anthron Festival also risks controversy, all the better to celebrate the magic that is music.
