Press release for the 26th International Piano Festival at La Roque d’Anthéron

Once again, it looks like 2006 is going to be a lively year. At a time when the whole of Provence is paying tribute to Cézanne for the centenary of his death, the Festival is celebrating several anniversaries: the hugely publicised 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart, which is being celebrated worldwide, the 125th anniversary of the birth of Bélà Bàrtok and finally the 150th anniversary of the death of Robert Schumann… so there will be no shortage of candles to blow out!
The Festival, now in its 26th year, will take place from July 20 to August 22 amidst a unique atmosphere, which is specific to La Roque, where the conviviality, simplicity, the talent of the artists and the beauty of the surroundings all contribute to making the musical events such a success... 70 concerts spread over 34 days, an eclectic choice of music, young and up-and-coming artists, a worldwide first production and a host of new artists…!
Over the years, René Martin has attributed an increasing degree of importance to giving an opportunity to young talent, and, as a result, our summer nights are all the more tuneful. The Russian school of piano will be given pride of place with the two Russians Alexeï Volodine, Alexander Kobrin, the Ukrainian Alexander Romanovsky and the Siberian Denis Matsuev. Lise de la Salle, David Fray, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, Iddo Bar-Shaï and Bertrand Chamayou (immortalised on a DVD produced in 2004 at La Roque entitled “Les pianos de demain”) will also be present, performing in the ‘Parc de Florans’. We will be playing host to Jonathan Biss, Simon Zaoui, a former pupil of the “Ensembles en Résidence” (which tours villages stretching from the Durance to the Alpilles in the summer), and we will also be introduced to Emmanuelle Swiecz, Davide Cabassi, Francesco Tristano Schlimé and the Polish artist Rafal Blechacz (the winner of the Fifteenth Warsaw Chopin Competition in 2005) for a Chopin evening on August 2 (at 9pm).
This year, there will be five ‘Piano Nights’, including two anniversary nights: Sunday, August 13, with a tribute to Bélà Bartòk, the night of July 29, a tribute to Robert Schumann and his passionate relationship with his wife Clara, and, of course, a Mozart night, which will close the “The Piano Sonatas” by Mozart played by Anne Queffélec and Jean-Claude Pennetier on Monday, August 14.
The delicate skills of the English Chamber Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra will be on display during five symphonic evenings. Chamber music will not be forgotten during the Festival with the baroque repertoires – played on period instruments (bass viol, harpsichords, gut strings etc) - and classical repertoires, which will include new ensembles, and notably the Zefiro Ensemble. With regard to the choirs this year, you can expect some intensely emotional moments! 80 men’s voices from Bilbao will fill the sweet air surrounding the ‘Etang des Aulnes’ on Tuesday, August 8 with the works of Wagner and Busoni. The Accentus choir and Laurence Equilbey will also be singing, for the third consecutive year, on August 4 and 5 at the Silvacane Abbey, with the Via Crucis by Liszt.
Whilst Mozart will be omnipresent throughout the summer, Lera Auerbach will be one of the ‘finds’ of 2006. This 33 year-old female composer will be playing both her own works and those of Moussorgski on August 3 (at 6pm). The duo Genova and Dimitrov, first-time guests at La Roque, will be celebrating the centenary of the birth of Chostakovitch on July 25 at 6pm… A worldwide first production of Messiaen’s “Fantasia for violin and piano” will be played by Momo Kodama and Isabelle Faust on Tuesday, August 16.
As far as jazz is concerned, the jazzmen who proved so popular in 2005 will once again be present, adding a few touches of swing to the beginning of the Festival, notably thanks to Bojan Z, Brad Melhdau and the Esbjörn Svensson Trio.
Last but not least, great international virtuosos such as Grigory Sokolov, Nikolaï Lugansky, Ivo Pogorelich, Lang Lang, Stephen Kovacevich, Richard Goode, Boris Berezovsky… or Marc-André Hamelin, Pierre-Laurent Aimard….and not to mention our loyal guests Emmanuel Strosser, Claire Désert, François-Frédéric Guy, Alexandre Tharaud and Jean-François Heisser…will all be present at this 26th Festival; a wonderful line-up that is not be missed!
